I used to hate suited connectors. In fact, I would get mad when someone beat me with them because I just didn’t understand how to play them, or their value.
Nowadays, I absolutely love ‘em. Give me suited connecters over Aces any day. Why do I say that? Well it might be a rather outlandish statement, but it makes sense when you think about it. While Aces beat suited connectors by value on their own, the chances of improving your hand with Aces is so much smaller.
What can you hit on the flop if you have pocket Aces? You’re looking for another Ace to make trips. Getting trips already on the flop, say three Jacks could be favourable. It would give you a full house and the only hand that would beat you would be the quad Fours, not too favourable then but still good enough to make a nice sized bet.
But that’s quite a long winded set of cards to get. With suited connectors you have the chance to hit a straight, flush or even straight flush. I’m not saying that you’ll get these any more times than you’d hit your trip Aces etc, but it’s about the value that you get out of the hand.
If you don’t hit on the flop you can just check or call, and get out of there if the bets start getting too high perhaps. But if you hit, good. If you hit and you’re up against someone with Aces, Kings, or A-K you’ve hit the jackpot. The best place to be is up against a person who does not want to lay down his hand, and trip Aces is a hard hand for even the most seasoned player to lay down.
Luckily for you, you don’t want them off the hand. Ideally you want all their chips in the middle if you’ve hit the flush or straight. It’s such a great feeling to take someone down with a seemingly mediocre hand.
This is how I’d play it. You don’t want to go in raising before the flop, because let’s face it, more times than not you will not hit a flush or straight. However, you do want to call a raise. Why? If someone’s raising then you need to put them on a premium hand, and that’s the hand you want to go up against with suited connectors.
Look at the flop, see what you’ve got. If you’ve hit at least something I’d stay in and call any moderate bet placed at you, even if it’s just bottom pair. As long as you have a chance of improving your hand, and chances are you will have. You might be one off a flush, go for it.
The amount of times I’ve made this hand, I can tell you it’s amusing. A lot of it is down to chance as well, but you’re just improving your chances is all. I’ve hand gutshot straight draws, flush draws and everything on the flop. I’d say about half the time I make the straight/flush once I’m drawing on the flop and half I don’t.
Poker is a numbers game. It’s not even about the game you could be playing right now, it’s about the overall points/money.
If you consistently make the right decisions you’re more likely to come out on top.
